SLB Las Vegas May 22nd

For the second round of the Super Lap Battle series we are partnering with XDC and Remix to put on a complete motorsports show at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on May 22nd. We’ll have 15 of the top time attack teams in the country going head to head on the road course to battle it out for the fastest lap time.

The question of the week seems to be, “What counts as a official record breaking time at Buttonwillow?” Here’s the breakdown of how SUPER LAP BATTLE records timing and record keeping.

Only times achieved during an official Super Lap Battle event count toward the official records maintained by Super Street magazine. With huge rule variances between different sanctioning bodies, there’s simply no way to accurately compare times between events.
Practice sessions do not count toward official results – the practice session is for teams to shake down their cars as well as determine run group classification. Only times run in competition sessions will count toward official results.
Timing is run by NASA using a AMB transponder system which is widely accepted as the standard for automotive race events. Only the times from the AMB transponder system are counted toward the official results.

We have strived to keep our rules and timing practices consistent in the six-plus years of running time attack events. This is to ensure that a reliable benchmark is set for tuners to compare times year after year. As teams become faster, records will soon be differentiated by mere tenths of a second. The need for us as a sanctioning body, as well as a publishing company, to report results in an accurate manner is vital to the integrity of the sport.

Modified Tuner Shootout

Kicking of the 2010 season we’ll be at Firebird International Raceway with the NASA AZ crew. Also taking place will be the Modified Tuner Shootout presented by Continental Tires that will put the top time attack cars in the country to a test at the dyno, drag strip, autocross and of course time attack. Results from the Super Lap Battle Finals 2009

Thanks to all the sponsors and competitors for making another successful year of time attack with the Super Lap battle series. This year’s Finals saw plenty of excitement as well as numerous records being broken, including the 4 year old Unlimited FF record previously held by GM. The World Racing Scion driven by Chris Rado beat the GM Cobalt’s time by over 1.5 seconds. For the Unlimited FR class Cricket/ FX Motorsports Development set the new record with a 1:45.247. In the Limited AWD class Ryan Gates pulled out the narrow victory by a tenth of a second margin to Evasive Motorsports with his 1:49.805 time. In the Street Classes we saw the Evasive Motorsport Honda S2000 get the new Street FR record with a 1:56.762 while in Street FF WindSpeed Motorsports / Continental Tire Dodge SRT-4 set the record with 2:00.256.

While the overall record held by HKS wasn’t beaten the Sierra Sierra team in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution showed that US tuners are catching up with their Overall winning time of 1:45.061.

Super Lap Battle x Alphanumeric

If anyone was into the car scene in the 90’s they should know who Alphanumeric is, they had released a shirt with a technical drawing of a B16 motor. They were one of the first clothing companies to recognize the import scene and this shirt soon became a classic. With Alphanumeric’s return they worked with us on re-creating this classic exclusively for the race teams at the Super Lap Battle Finals on November 11th.

Tires and Super Lap Battle Records

When Super Street brought the first time attack to the US in 2004 there were very few rules. There were only two classes, Limited and Unlimited, no tube frame chassis or push rod motors were allowed, Limited Class cars had to retain their factory glass and tires had to be legal for use on public roadways in either the US, Japan or Europe. Over time we have had to update the rule book as things became more competitve, in 2005 we introduced UTQG miniums and in 2006 we added the Street Class. Even with these updates and additions to the rule book we have always kept it as open as possible to allow tuners the room to innovate. The whole spirit of this competition is to see who really is the fastest, who is the best at overall setup not just who can make the most horsepower or look the prettiest.

Our event has the longest standing history of time attack events in the United States, at the end of the year the overall record has always been set at our Finals. One of the constants in this is the fact that all cars competiting have to be on a tire that is legal for road use (in the US it means it has to be DOT approved).

Alphanumeric x 5&A Dime Daily Driver Get Together

Super Lap Battle Auto Club Speedway

For qualifying round #3 we saw a head to head battle in the Unlimited and Limited Classes. In the Unlimited Class we saw the BC/C-West Honda S2000 take the win with a 1:40.870 against Crawford’s 2008 Subaru STI. Tyler McQuarrie piloted both cars but due to Crawford running a racing slick which is not allowed in Super Lap Battle, their times were not counted.

In the Limited AWD class we saw new comer LIC Motorsports taking on JC Meynet. JC pulled out the win with his 1:43.563 to LIC’s 1:45.699. This was LIC’s first outing in their Subaru STI and was impressive for a shakedown, be on the lookout for this car at the Finals in November.
