It was another exciting day at the track with five records being broken this year. FXMD NSX not only set a new Unlimited FR record but broke the Overall Record held by Sierra Sierra with a lap time of 1:40.981. Earlier in the day the FXMD driver, Tyler McQuarrie had popped his shoulder out with the excessive amount of force the NSX has through the corners. Big congrats to Tyler and the entire FXMD team for pulling it on the last session of the day. Chris Rado from World Racing also broke his previous Unlimited FF record with his Scion tC, his lap time was a impressive 1:47.394. In the Limited class we saw Berk Technology’s BMW 135 set the new Limited FR record with a time of 1:53.221 and Sportcar Motion’s Integra set a new Limited FF record with a 1:54.789. In Street class we saw for the first time a Street FF car to break into the sub 2 minute lap times, Clint Boisdeau pulled a 1:59.086 in his 2005 Ford Focus.

The question of the week seems to be, “What counts as a official record breaking time at Buttonwillow?” Here’s the breakdown of how SUPER LAP BATTLE records timing and record keeping.

1. Only times achieved during an official Super Lap Battle event count toward the official records maintained by Super Street magazine.  With huge rule variances between different sanctioning bodies, there’s simply no way to accurately compare times between events.
2. Practice sessions do not count toward official results – the practice session is for teams to shake down their cars as well as determine run group classification. Only times run in competition sessions will count toward official results.
3. Timing is run by NASA using a AMB transponder system which is widely accepted as the standard for automotive race events. Only the times from the AMB transponder system are counted toward the official results.

We have strived to keep our rules and timing practices consistent in the six-plus years of running time attack events. This is to ensure that a reliable benchmark is set for tuners to compare times year after year. As teams become faster, records will soon be differentiated by mere tenths of a second. The need for us as a sanctioning body, as well as a publishing company, to report results in an accurate manner is vital to the integrity of the sport.

While the overall record held by HKS wasn’t beaten the Sierra Sierra team in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution showed that US tuners are catching up with their Overall winning time of 1:45.061.
