Results from the Super Lap Battle Finals 2009

Thanks to all the sponsors and competitors for making another successful year of time attack with the Super Lap battle series. This year’s Finals saw plenty of excitement as well as numerous records being broken, including the 4 year old Unlimited FF record previously held by GM. The World Racing Scion driven by Chris Rado beat the GM Cobalt’s time by over 1.5 seconds. For the Unlimited FR class Cricket/ FX Motorsports Development set the new record with a 1:45.247. In the Limited AWD class Ryan Gates pulled out the narrow victory by a tenth of a second margin to Evasive Motorsports with his 1:49.805 time. In the Street Classes we saw the Evasive Motorsport Honda S2000 get the new Street FR record with a 1:56.762 while in Street FF WindSpeed Motorsports / Continental Tire Dodge SRT-4 set the record with 2:00.256.

While the overall record held by HKS wasn’t beaten the Sierra Sierra team in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution showed that US tuners are catching up with their Overall winning time of 1:45.061.

Super Lap Battle Round 1 Recap

The first round of the Super Lap Battle qualifiers started off with a bang from mother nature with a little rain throughout the day. While the rain made things a little more difficult the Crawford STI driven by the infamous Tarzan Yamada was able to set a new track record with a blazing time of 1:02.100. In the Limited Class JC Meynet pulled out the overall class win with a 1:04.297. Getting the Street Class overall win by a 2.4 second margin was Tony Szirka’s UMS Evo equipped on Continental Contisport 3s setting the fastest time for street tires with a 1:09.512. Marking the second year in a row, we saw Evasive Motorsports break the Limited AWD class record at the Super Lap Battle Finals in their 2009 Mitsubishi Evo IX. Driven by Tim Kuo they broke their 2007 record by almost 4 seconds with a final time of 1:50.003. Speed Element pulled in at second place with a 1:53.229 and MFQ at third place with a 1:53.981, both teams performances would have put them in the record books had it not been for Evasive Motorsports. Evasive’s new lap time puts them on the pace to be the first Limited Class team to break into the sub 1:50 times which we previously saw only in the Unlimited AWD and FR Classes. It is interesting to note that the very first Time Attack ever held in the United States saw Signal Auto in their Unlimited AWD R34 GTR set the fastest time of the day in April 2004 with a 1:54.2. The Limited AWD class has become increasingly faster compared to a few years ago.

The Super Lap Battle Street AWD class had one of the closest contests of the year. With over half the field going 1:59 or faster the Street AWD class has become the benchmark for street performance tires. Pulling out the win by a narrow margin of 1/10th of a second was Nils Leufven in his 2004 Mitsubishi Evo 8 with a blistering fast time of 1:56.672 compared to Ryan Gates Evo X time of 1:56.726. Coming up third was AMS Evo X, driven by Martin Musial, with a 1:57.067.

The Street FR class saw a classic battle between Turbo vs. NA with the Yokohama/Boost Logic Toyota Supra driven by Matt Andrews going up against Evasive Motorsport’s Honda S2000 with Robert Walker at the wheel. In the end it was Turbo power taking the victory with Matt Andrews getting a 1:57.711 against Robert Walker’s 1:58.364. Coming in close behind the Evasive S2000 was Manly Kao in his 2005 Lotus Elise with a 1:58.752.

In 2008 Street FF was a new class for Super Lap Battle in which we saw a lot of different manufacturers in a typically Honda dominated class. A Honda did in fact pull off the 1st place win however but it wasn’t your typical Civic hatchback or CRX. Evasive Motorsports 2008 Honda Civic SI 4 Door showed the true potential of this new chassis. Pulling into 2nd place was Douglas Wind in his 2004 Dodge SRT-4 and Cobb Tuning getting 3rd in a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3.
